Prioritizing Community

My name is Brigette Kozash and I am running to be your next mayor of Nacogdoches. I am a small business owner, an active community member, and I am proud to call Nacogdoches my home. My goal is to ensure that every community member has a voice when our city makes decisions. It’s time for our city government to be more inclusive, transparent, and authentic. Together, with your support, I look forward to working with you as mayor.

As your mayor, I will —

  • Engage with the community — each citizen deserves to be heard. Our mayor must be consistently present and involved at town events, not just in the Council Chamber.

  • Celebrate what makes Nacogdoches special — Nacogdoches is a beautiful town full of wonderful individuals and micro-communities. I want to encourage our thriving music and arts scene, multicultural events, and town traditions.

  • End conflicts of interest — it’s time that our leaders choose Nacogdoches’ interests over their own every time. Personal gain and relationships should not be a factor when making decisions for our city.

  • Be transparent — you deserve to know how your taxes are being spent and our city budget should be accessible, including detailed departmental spending.

  • Maintain financial accountability — our citizens deserve improved infrastructure. We must prioritize a walkable town, adequate storm drainage and sewers, and safe and sustainable city services when making budget decisions.

  • Be compassionate — all city employees and volunteers, first responders, non-profits, small + large businesses, and citizens are what make Nacogdoches so special. I will lead with positivity and gratitude when interacting with you.

  • Collaborate with SFA — as a proud SFA alumna, I strive to continue collaboration between Nacogdoches and SFA. The synergy created between us makes for an ever-growing dynamic and strong partnership.

  • Encourage small business ownership — I have my community to thank for having a successful small business. It is essential that our city encourages and bolsters folks who are starting small businesses. Granting zoning and special use permits fairly and offering informative lectures to small business owners and entrepreneurs is vital.

  • Work to address regressive property tax — whether you rent or own, you pay property tax. It’s time to evaluate honestly and transparently what goes into assessing homes and make adjustments that are beneficial to Nacogdoches residents as well as the city.
